On Saturday, December 4th, 2021, Nam Theun 2 joined the celebration of International Volunteer Day at the Crowne Plaza Vientiane. The event was organized both virtually and physically with limited places based on preventive precautions. The participants were represented by various organizations such as the Lao Youth Union official, Youth union members, United Nation Agencies, and partners including Nam Theun 2 as well as youths and volunteers.
The objectives of the event are to celebrate the International Day on December 5th, 2021, under the theme “Volunteer now for our common future”, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the United Nations Volunteers, and the important national-party days i.e., the 101st birthday anniversary of President Kaysone Phomvihane and the 46th anniversary of the Lao National Day.
The event was officially launched by the opening remarks of Ms. Sarah Sekkenes, UN Resident Coordinator, and Mr. Bounta Thephavong, the Secretary-General of the Lao Youth Union, followed by presentations from different speakers introducing their performance in enhancing the youth projects, the information about the volunteers and the importance of the volunteerism. Aside from these presentations, the highlights of activities were the essay competition on “Innovative ideas on how volunteers can contribute to the Covid-19 prevention measures”, the photo contest on “Volunteers in actions in contributing to the implementation of 18 Goals of SDGs”, and the video contest on “Volunteer now for our common future”.
Nam Theun 2 joined the event in supporting the prizes and participated as judges of the competition. In this event, Noly Xaythideth, the Nakai youth member introduced the social activities of Nakai youth reflecting the livelihood of Nakai which is a part of the NT2 2035 Sustainability Vision.
