On July 18th and 19th, 2024, the Hydro Safety Team convened a meeting on Wet Season Readiness and conducted an Evacuation Plan Workshop at the RNT office meeting room in Sangkeo village, Gnommalath district, Khammouane province.
The session was co-chaired by Mr. Vongkham Phanthanouvong, Director General of the Social Welfare Department, Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare; Mr. Viengxay Chantha, Deputy Director of the Department of Energy Safety Management (DESM) under the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM); and Dr. Dousith Phommachanh, Deputy COO and Plant Director of Nam Theun 2.
A total of 74 participants representing three departments from MEM, one department from MLSW, two departments from MONRE, Kham Keuth and Gnommalath district authorities, relevant sections from Khammouane and Bolikhamxay provinces, Nam Theun 1 Power Company, Theun Hinboun Power Company, and concerned departments from Nam Theun 2 attended the meeting.
The meeting aimed to facilitate discussions among government authorities and relevant dam operators along the Nam Theun River regarding the implementation of Wet Season Readiness and the NT2 Evacuation Plan for Nam Theun 2.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the co-chairs expressed high appreciation for the successful meeting, attributing its achievements to the contributions of all participants. The meeting successfully produced an agreed-upon NT2 Wet Season Readiness report, outlined future coordination and cooperation, and established an outline for the NT2 Evacuation Plan.
In the event of an emergency, such as a flood, the safety and preparedness of downstream communities are paramount. An Evacuation Action Plan (EAP) is a vital framework designed to ensure these communities can relocate to safe areas swiftly and effectively.
